Gloucestershire police PFI scrapped

The £50m Gloucestershire Police Authority Private Finance Initiative (PFI) scheme has been dropped due to it being no longer affordable.

The scheme has been scrapped with immediate effect as the police authority is trying to find money to protect the future of their staff rather than finance new buildings.

Rob Garnham, Chairman of the Gloucestershire Police Authority said: "With the current financial crisis, we have had to look again at all our strategies and we cannot end up in the situation of trying to afford new buildings at the expense of officers and staff."

"We owe it to our colleagues to ensure that their well-being and employment comes before bricks and mortar. And that makes me feel even more confident that the decision the police authority has made, to cancel the PFI project, is the right one."
