£800m North Wales waste deal in the pipeline

A partnership of five North Wales Councils have advertised the procurement of a waste treatment and disposal contract expected to be worth up to £800m over 25 years.

The project has been financed by £142m in Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) funding, confirmed by the Government last week. Under the deal, the chosen contractor will be expected to handle 150,000 tonnes of residual waste each year.

Local authorities that form the partnership are ; Flintshire county council, which leads the project, Conwy county borough council, Denbighshire county council, Gwynedd council and the Isle of Anglesey county council.

Stephen Penny, project manager of North Wales Residual Waste Treatment Partnership (NWRWTP) , said : " It is very important for two main reasons, one- because they ate predominately isolated in terms of their rural locations, there is not a lot of opportunities around them and, secondly, landfill is running out in Wales and there is only about five years left."
