Street lighting scheme shelved

Harrow Council has had to abandon its PFI Street lighting plans due to the financial pressures of the economic climate.

The project was originally approved by the government to proceed with the installation of 14000 new street lights on the borough’s roads.

Councillor Susan Hall, deputy leader of the council confirmed to the Harrow Times that the project had been shelved.

She said: "The recession impacted severely on a number of ambitious schemes and the street lighting programme unfortunately fell into that category.

"While the Department of Transport recognised and still does recognise the merit of our proposal, it was irresponsible of us to commit to £1m a year over 25-years, given the unprecedented financial pressures on us caused by the credit crunch."
